Contemporary artist Xu Zhen likes to tease. His work carries particular interest in conflict, in being a nuisance an in pure frivolous and megalomaniac irony, nonsense. At the age of 30, the prominent artist from Shanghai executes video-installations where he reflects upon current events and technology, based on performances whereby he gathers dozens of people to make up the concept of "body" which he proposes in his short films and photographs.
Without a doubt, his best known series of installations was the one executed in 2005 with the OK MY Club volunteer group Ok My Club. In it, Xu Zhen and his friends supposedly beat up important figures of the political and entrepreneurial realm using shoes and sticks. Such figures included UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Bill Gates. Notwithstanding the tricks used, Zhen's art portrayed what was desired and created a fund offering financial support to collective beatings where all the money collected (quite real) would be used to finance transport and accommodation in Ok My Club during the beatings.
Virtual gallery Shangart - the artist's representative - makes his pieces available, as well as a large array of articles and interviews concerning him. It is a great path to embark on in order to better know this man who loves to entice and, of course, to donate to Ok, My Club.
