The Misfits - cinema and photography

Behind a story about wild horses, The Misfits is a metaphor about freedom and, at its core, America. With an excellent script penned by Arthur Miller and John Houston's first-rate direction, the movie also featured an ensemble cast that included such stars as Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift as the main characters. Yet, behind the cameras, other artists also had the chance to shine: nine photographers from the Magnum Agency, who documented the backstage of the shooting. And, some say, it had more drama going on than the actual movie.

From romance (Marilyn and Arthur Miller, who were married at the time, got divorced and he married Inge Morath, one of the photographers from Magnum) to drama (Marilyn's whims and crisis) to tragedy (Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe would die soon after the movie's completion and Clift would suffer a nervous and physical breakdown), it all came together to make the backstage more interesting the the picture itself.

The nine photographers, seven men and two women recorded everything, in both a contrite and indiscrete manner, in both a cold and a passionate way - Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cornell Capa, Ernst Hass, Bruce Davidson, Erich Hartmann, Dennis Stock, Elliott Erwitt, the men, Eve Arnold e Inge Morath, the women. Together, they took hundreds of still photographs that have crossed the globe and are a part of Magnum's estate. Marilyn is always there. The blonde bombshell is in nearly every single shot, such is the camera's attraction for her and her own attraction for the camera.

Cinema, moving images, and photography, a moment, still forever - what's the difference? The Misfits is both of them. Always a delight to (re-)watch.
