Everyone of us, at one point in our lives, have had the chance to see gadgets like these in futuristic illustrations, sci-fi movies or fantasy stories, in which a guy like Flash Gordon moves through the air with a mini-rocket on his back. We've always thought, let's face it, that it wasn't more than sheer delirium, because technical difficulties (weight, autonomy, stability, etc.) were too many. Well, the day has arrived when all these problems have been solved and such machines have become a reality. Let's start with this personal helicopter...
The rocket helicopter, called the Libelula, is a surprisingly simple concept. It consists of a vest in carbon fiber with a motor powered by two small rockets fixed to its blades, powered by two hydrogen peroxide reservoirs. The placing of the force in the extremities of the blades eliminates the reaction effect that would make its user spin at the same speed, but in the opposite direction. Genius and safe, at least in theory. That's what its inventors, the Tecnologia Aeroespacial Mexicana (TAM) company, which also commercializes the gadget in the entire world, claim.
We don't know if there have been any buyers yet, or the price of the device... The whole secret relies on the little rocket that is 25 cm long and has a diameter of 4 cm but offers an impulse of 2 200 pounds.
If the Libelula seems bold to you, then what about the Rocket Belt? For the price of $125 000, this fabulous gadget transforms a mere mortal into an amazing Rocketeer, on the condition that he's under 136 Kg in weight. The company assures a 10 flight training and a 24 hours a day assistence. What are you waiting for? Numerous people have already flown using this device and the first one was a woman, Isabel Lozano, a rocketwoman.
