The picture portrays a girl carrying mangoes on the way to her home, located at the Olusosun dump in Nigeria. With an area of almost 500 000 m2, it is the biggest dump in all of Africa. And it's expanding at an alarming rate: every day, 2400 tons of garbage are unloaded there, mostly from the city of Lagos. There are about 1000 precarious houses around Olusosun and its inhabitants live from the gathering and selling of objects and waste found in the trash.

A worker gathers dead fish in the Gaungiao lake, in China. The untreated industrial waste spill in the waters caused the death of about 50 tons of fish. But it isn't only the industries that consume water: an immense and growing population has driven the water resources of the large country to the point of collapse. Last year, the Yangtze river, for instance, has reached its lowest level since 1866.

Dead kangaroo due to the drought, in Australia. It hadn't rained as little as it did last summer, since 1900, while, on the other hand, the temperature hadn't been so high. Many of the country's regions are embarking on their fifth year of drought, in a row. In the city of Perth, for instance, drinkable water has turned saline. In Sydney, the authorities are applying heavy penalties to anyone who is caught watering their garden.

In this image, captured in the infamous Tiananmen square, where a man is flying his kite, whose colours contrast with the grey fog, the smog, that surrounds the entire place. The air pollution in Beijing is five times bigger than the standard set by the World Health Organization, a situation that becomes worse during summer months, precisely when the Olympics will take place. In spite of the authorities' effort, the true problem are the three million automobiles and the dozens of industries within the urban perimeter...

The thermoelectric central Drax em Yorkshire, in England, releases nearly 23 million tons of CO2 a year, the equivalent of 100 developing nations. Here, 7% of all electric energy consumed in England is produced through the burning of coal. This process, that uses fossil fuel to generate steam to move the electric generators, is responsible for about one fourth of the carbon dioxide emissions and the greenhouse effect. The coal is the worse.

Cattle in a pasture located in the state of Rondônia, in Brazil. Wide areas of Amazonian forest have been burnt to give way to the agriculture. In the first years of this century alone, an area the size of Great Britain has already been destroyed. Deforestation is responsible for 17% of greenhouse gases emissions. This is due to the burning of trees that, on the other hand, also results in a smaller ability to absorb CO2...
