These are the typical welding masks: functional, light, resistant, clean-cut and only with the strictly necessary elements to guarantee its user a safe and comfortable job. But design also reached these industrial accessories and managed to innovate and improve what seemed to have nothing more to invent.
The Speedglas SL, created by Niklas Lilenthal and Rutger Belin for 3M, was awarded a design award in 2007. It's a high-tech helmet, with a screen of liquid crystals that darkens in fractions of a second once it detects the light from the voltaic arch. Besides, it only weighs about 360 grams, which saves a lot of head and neck aches for those who spend their entire day welding. But the high-tech helmets can also be costumized, with a good dose of imagination and aerography...
Finally, something more conventional technically and more radical decoratively, and also a truly creative proposal, but of dubious safety, from China.
