Probably, most people never thought of using bubble gum to sculpt. That is a shame, because it seems to be a material that is full of ductile and expressive possibilities. The effect Maurizio Savini was able to attain is truly amazing. But aside from its aesthetic qualities, there is something meaningful and ironic in his work. The chewing gum was brought to Italy by American soldiers at the end of World War II, along with blue jeans, nylon stockings and Rock and Roll. That is why it's associated with cultural colonization and also with the futility with which western societies decayed and converted to consumerism. And when we look at Savini's fleshless figurines, made out of American Gum we can't stop thinking about alienation...

This artist uses chewing gum in her work also and does it in a much more meaningful and material-respectful way then just a simple sculpting...
