Montegiro Lusso, an unusual turntable
A mere mortal looks at sound equipment (the kind with exceptional quality and a matching price), with a mix of admiration and contempt. Admiration because, let's face it, a powerful amplifier or a set of electrostatic panel speakers are imposing and disdain because they can't find (or hear) such a big difference between them and the average equipment, at least not so much that it would justify the price. However, it's impossible to remain indifferent to a turntable plate like this one, of haunting concept and design...
Vinyl records are making a comeback, as their high sound fidelity is assured. As such, like many other brands, the famous German brand Montegiro has been showing various high quality turntables, such as the Legno, the Vivo or the Mondo. But with its latest offer, which goes by the name of Lusso, the brand has clearly outdone itself.
The concept is minimalistic: an inverted cone body, consisting of alternate layers of aluminum and black acrylic, which supports the vinyl records. At its side, two similar cones, one of them with a high precision motor that triggers the plate and the other with a carbon fiber arm that supports the reading head. The top of the line version, shown in the pictures has yet another arm. I would love to listen to the sound of a good vinyl in equipment like this, but, unfortunately, the price is discouraging: $47 000 USD (€30 000) for the basic model.
